Paid ads are coming to OpenAI. Here’s how direct response brands are preparing

2026 is about to be a huge year for online advertisers. We’re only halfway through Q1, and the performance marketing world is already bracing itself for some major industry shifts.

In January, OpenAI announced that Free and Go ChatGPT users will soon start seeing tester paid ads appearing on the platform. Not in the banner-ad, scroll-stopping way you’d expect on Meta or Google—but in a way that could reshape direct response advertising as we know it.

Some brands are excited, others are skeptical, and everyone is watching.

Here’s what we know so far.

How Ads Will Work on ChatGPT

“The best ads are useful, entertaining, and help people discover new products and services,” says OpenAI, “Given what AI can do, we’re excited to develop new experiences over time that people find more helpful and relevant than any other ads.”

The brand has been choosing its words carefully while introducing its advertising plan to the world, prioritizing restraint and user experience.

Here’s what’s clear so far:

  • Ads will be native and contextual, not disruptive
  • User trust and experience are the priority
  • Monetization is expected to feel helpful, not promotional
  • Ads will likely show up inside answers (not around them)

While the brand has set clear boundaries as testing begins, top advertisers are not expecting these strict guidelines to stay for long.

CMO of Mediaocean, Aaron Goldman, states, “They’re coming out of the gate with no ads on ‘sensitive topics’ such as health and wellness, but, knowing how lucrative those categories are for advertisers, I’d say it’s only a matter of time before they move those goalposts.”

Health and wellness DTC brands aren’t sitting around waiting for ad eligibility; they’re preparing new tactics.

The Future of Direct Response Advertising on AI Platforms

OpenAI ads won’t look like Meta ads. They won’t behave like YouTube ads. And it definitely won’t reward lazy performance creative.

If you’re used to interrupting for attention, this platform won’t be forgiving.

But if you’re good at earning attention? Different story.

OpenAI represents a shift away from intent signaling toward intent inference. Keywords are out, and education is in.

Instead of targeting audiences Googling “best supplement for gut health,” brands may eventually compete to show up when someone asks, “Why does my digestion feel off even when I eat clean?”

It’s a new ad environment where:

  • Messaging must educate before it converts
  • Claims must feel credible, not salesy
  • Creative has to hold up inside a conversation

Which brings us to the real opportunity for health and wellness brands.

Preparing Health and Wellness Brands for AI Advertising

When health and wellness ads eventually open on OpenAI, they won’t start at zero.

The verticals before them will define:

  • Which formats perform
  • Which claims survive scrutiny
  • How to win audience trust
  • Which creative tests to start first

Supplement brands watching closely now will skip the most expensive learning phase.

Here’s where we’d start:

1. Watch other verticals closely

When OpenAI ads roll out: Screenshot formats, study language, and track offer positioning. If you’re on a paid plan, use a second email for Free or Go ChatGPT for the full user experience.

2. Build problem-first creative

Start mapping customer questions (not just hooks). Conversational ads reward brands that deeply understand audience: symptoms, objections, and awareness stages.

3. Pressure-test your claims

If your messaging only works in a loud, scroll-based feed, it won’t survive conversational scrutiny. Start asking:

  • Can this claim stand up when explained?
  • Is there a credible talent we can start collaborating with?
  • Does it rely on hype or clarity?
  • Is this helpful, or just persuasive?

These patterns will become your playbook later.

Most direct response brands will wait until OpenAI ads are “official.” By then, the easy wins will be gone.

Start observing now, preparing early, and rethinking what performance looks like in a trust-first environment.

Smart health and wellness brands don’t need access to ChatGPT yet. They already know they have the upper hand.
